Hudeibi calls for a comprehensive political reform in Egypt
Egypt, Politics, 11/10/2003
The general guide of the banned Ikhwan al-Muslimin (Muslim Brothers) groups in Egypt Ma'moun al-Hudeibi has criticized ruling out his group from the national dialogue started already by the ruling democratic national party with the parties of the Egyptian opposition.
In an al-Iftar banquet organized by the group yesterday evening and attended by representatives for various political forces in Egypt but was not attended by any representative for the ruling party, al-Hudeibi called for the need of making comprehensive political reform, canceling the state of emergency and all laws that restrict freedoms.
Al-Hudeibi accused the government of being responsible for the corruption saying that the "political stalemate resulted in the spread of corruption which penetrated into all government and public establishments. A matter which by itself led to a grave political crisis."
The general guide of the Muslim Brothers group warned that corruption and the increase of poverty are conducive to "a great loss in the society." Al-Hudeibi, on the other hand, accused the government to be confined to mere mediation as a neutral side in the Israeli- Palestinians conflict instead of "total and strong bias to the brave Palestinian people."
Worthy mentioning that the Muslim Brothers group has the largest opposition bloc at the Egyptian People's Assembly ( the Parliament). It is represented by 16 parliamentarians out of 454 who are members of the parliament. The Muslim Brothers parliamentarians were elected as independents because the movements does not enjoy a legal status, though the Egyptian authorities admit that this movement exists as one of the largest opposition political force on the Egyptian political arena.
