Mauritania's authorities release Weld Hedalah

A source in Mauritania's police said that the candidate for the Presidential elections, former President Muhammad Khona Wild Hedalah who was detained on Thursday afternoon was released the same day in the evening but the fate of six persons who were close to him and detained with him, is still unknown.

Mauritania's security authorities, detained Weld Hedalah, one of the prominent opposition candidates for the presidential elections to be held yesterday.

The authorities had justified the detention operation in that Weld Hedallah was planning to confiscate the authority and said it found publications in which Weld Hedalah was provoking use of violence and a plan to what he called a coupe in case he fails in the elections.

The spokesman for Weld Hedalah, Weld Asneibah denied these accusations. He said these are attempts to undermine the elections process and bury the peaceful rotatation of the presidency before its birth.

Asneibah accused the President of Mauritania of planning for a constitutional or military coupe in case of his defeat in the elections.

News reports in the capital Nouakchott said that another candidate for the Presidential elections called Haba refused to surrender to the authorities which besiege him in the capital.

Independent news reports said that the government summoned units from the army deployed in sensitive areas of the capital before they returned back to the barracks. The reports said that this is a precaution to acts of unrest on the voting day, Friday.
