Russian- Israeli differences over the Roadmap
Israel-Russia, Politics, 11/5/2003

The Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon has failed to convince Russia to give up a proposal it had submitted to the UN Security Council to make the Roadmap obligatory on the two Palestinian and Israeli sides.

Differences had overwhelmed Sharon's talks in Moscow with the Russian President Vladimir Putin concerning the Roadmap.

An Israeli official accompanying Sharon said that Putin did not directly answer the latter's request to withdraw an official Russian proposal from the UN Security Council making it obligatory for the Palestinians and Israel to implement the Roadmap in which Moscow took part in formulating it, in addition to the USA, the European union and the UN.

Putin stressed during the meeting the determination of Russia "to take part effectively in settling the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, expressing his country's concern over the consequences of the escalation of the conflict on the great number of Russian speaking community in Israel.

Sharon said during his meeting with Putin that Israel is ready to give concessions for the Palestinians but not "in the field of security." Lat week Russia proposed to the UN a draft resolution calling on the UN Security Council for the first time to officially recognize the roadmap which calls for the foundation of a Palestinian state side-by-side with Israel.

Sharon failed to convince Putin to put pressure on Syria to control Hizbullah Party in Lebanon and listing Palestinian organizations within on the Russian list of terrorist organizations.

The Israeli prime minister also failed to convince Moscow to halt its contributions into the Iranian nuclear program, despite the fact that an Israeli official said that Sharon and Putin agreed during their meeting to increase contacts between the two countries' officials concerning the program.
