Two American soldiers killed, a judge assassinated in Musil
Iraq-USA, Politics, 11/5/2003

News reports in Iraq said that unidentified persons assassinated the deputy chairman of the Court Of Appeal in Musil city, hours after the killing of another American soldier yesterday in Baghdad.

Eye witnesses said that unidentified persons opened fire at judge Ismael Youssef Sadeq at the moment he got out of his house and he was killed immediately.

In Karkouk, news reports quoted the Iraqi police and medical sources as saying that another Iraqi judge was killed and one of his relatives was wounded in the city by the US occupation bullets. These acts of assassination came just one day after the assassination of a judge in Najaf city in charge of trying Baathist members.

In the same context, an Iraqi court ordered the imprisonment of a former Iraqi official, Abdul Menem, for 14 years after he was convicted of kidnapping sons of a political rival. The US forces had appointed Abdul Menem to run an area including Najaf after the toppling of Saddam Hussein but arrested him later over suspicion that he had committed kidnapping crimes and financial crimes.

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for the US forces said that one American soldier was killed and another wounded in a bomb explosion in the downtown of Baghdad, hours after the US army announced that one of its soldiers was killed and another was wounded in Tikrit.

This coincided with the attack by missile rockets at an American convoy in al-Jazeera area to the west of Sameraa city.

In Baqouba near Baghdad, the occupation forces launched a raid in which it broke into several houses and detained two persons suspected to be involved in damaging one American tank and killing four soldiers who were manning it four days ago.

In a later development, two Iraqis were killed and other four injured in a booby trapped car explosion near a hotel often visited by Iranians in the downtown of Karbala. Iraqi officials said that the bomb was implanted in a car near the hotel and the explosion resulted in large damages.

Meantime, American soldiers detained al-Jazeera photographer Salah Hassan during the assassination attempt on deputy governor of Baqouba on Monday and confiscated his camera and tapes and then took him to a camp, giving no reasons for his detention.

However, in light of these deteriorated security conditions, Spain had decided to withdraw its diplomats from Iraq temporarily because of what was described by its foreign minister Ana Maria Palacio of the complex situation there.
