Islamists killed in clash with Saudi police
Saudi Arabia, Local, 11/4/2003
Saudi Arabia's TV said that the police killed two Islamists in a clash that took place in Mecca yesterday and foiled what it called a terrorist plot.
The source said that one Saudi policeman was slightly wounded in the clash which took place in al-Shareya quarters to the east of Mecca, noting that the police members found an amount of weapons and ammunition at the site of the clash.
The two killed men were within a group of 6 persons chased by security men.
The group entered a building in the suburb where fire was exchanged and four of the 6 Islamists were able to flee towards a mountainous range and the security forces are still looking for them, according to security sources.
This clash comes several days after a warning by the American embassy in the capital, Riyadh, to the American community over the possibility of attacks taking place in the Kingdom during the holy month of Ramadan. Both Australia, Britain and Canada made similar warnings to their citizens.
The Saudi security forces arrested large number of persons suspected to have links with what it called terrorism since the bombing operation which took place on May 12 in a residential complex in Riyadh and resulted in killing 35 persons including several number of the executors of the attack.
