UN official inquires about treatment of sub-saharan illegal immigrant in eastern morocco
Morocco-UN, Local, 10/30/2003
Visiting United Nations special rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, Gabriella Rodriguez, met Tuesday local officials in Oujda to inquire about how Moroccan authorities treat Sub-Saharan illegal immigrants arrested in Morocco.
Heads of security services and social workers were present at the meeting during which the UN official was briefed on reasons that make of eastern Morocco a transit from the Algerian territory to the European continent.
The local officials explained that authorities bring humanitarian aid consisting of food and health care to illegal immigrants.
They deplored, nevertheless, that illegal immigration constitutes a burden given the difficulty to identify the undocumented illegal immigrants who are arrested. Additional efforts are needed to return them to their countries of origin.
The number of illegal immigrants who were arrested in eastern Morocco in 2002 reached 3,017. In 2003, it increased to 3,648, local officials said.
The special rapporteur who started her Morocco visit on October 19 is touring several Moroccan cities. At the end of her mission on October 31, she will submit a report to the upcoming session of the UN Human Rights Committee's meeting in its session scheduled in March-April 2004.
