Patriarch Laham holds a special mass on Pope's pontificate

Patriarch Gregarious III Laham of Antioch and All Orient of the Greek- Catholics on Tuesday headed a special Mass celebration on the 25th anniversary of His Holiness John Paul II's pontificate.
The Mass, celebrated at Zeitoun (Olives) Cathedral in Damascus, was attended by Christian clergymen Syria, Lebanon, the USA and Archbishop Hialarion Cappucci the exiled Patriarch of Jerusalem.
Patriarch Laham delivered a speech in which he recalled "the important visit of the Holy Father to Syria, the land of civilizations and cradle of Christianity, and its historical significance."
The Patriarch pointed out to the Pontiff's stances in "supporting Justice and rights and his backing of peoples' legitimate issues, particularly his solidarity with the Palestinian issue."
He also denounced Israel's aggression on the Syrian lands and its practices against the Palestinian people.
The Patriarch highly praised the stances of President Bashar al-Assad and his efforts for the protection of the nation and the establishment of peace.
His Eminence, on the occasion of the holy fasting month of Ramadan, prayed God that "He may safeguard and support President al-Assad, and peace and progress prevail all over Syria and her sons."
