Sahara issue: the pathetic politics of UN Security Council
Morocco-UN, Editorial, 10/25/2003

How much longer will the large powers at the UN Security Council play politics with the Sahara issue? There was the old colonialism of the western countries and that of the Soviet Union, to be replaced by the US and the UN Security Council -- which are the modern and sophisticated version of divide and conquer methods, in which they keep regions and certain geographic patches in turmoil to their strategic goals and leverages.

The few southern Moroccan people involved in this sad problem have the opportunity to live in a country with decent framework of standards for political and economic opportunity. Algeria also has the right to free itself from problem that is preventing it and the region from moving forward so that they can all build and focus on providing their citizens a decent standard of living in economics and politics.

We know how harmful and illegitimate an institution the UN Security Council is. For anyone other than the UK and US to participate in this game should be unacceptable.

What is holding the world from getting done with these problems that are sucking the energies of entire regions, creating friction, wasting resources on arms, security and otherwise, and distracting from their development? Politics -- the lowest form of it. The UN Security Council should fix itself first.
