Jordanian king receives Qrei and American delegation: The Palestinians have to abide by obligations
Jordan-Palestine, Politics, 10/24/2003
The Jordanian King Abdullah II who received yesterday in al-Aqaba a delegation representing the US Congress and the Palestinian prime minister Ahmad Qrei, urged the Palestinians to execute their security obligations, as stated in the Roadmap.
The Jordanian news agency Petra said that the Jordanian King discussed with the American delegation "the current situation in Palestine and Jordan and Jordan's view to find a just and permanent solution for the two cases."
The Jordanian official news agency added that the meeting also dealt with "Jordanian- American relations in the economic and political fields." The delegation which is composed of 8 Congress members arrived on Wednesday in Amman and it was due to meet with senior officials, according to a statement issued by the American embassy in Amman.
Earlier in the day, the Jordanian king met with the Palestinian prime minister Ahmad Qrei on the situation in the Palestinian territories and the role played by Washington to implement the Roadmap.
A source at the Jordanian royal court said that the Jordanian king "asked ideas from the Palestinians in order to convey to the US President George Bush with whom he will be meeting during the two coming months." The source added that the King stressed "we will continue our contacts" with the American side to halt violence between the Israelis and the Palestinians. He noted that King Abdullah stressed to Qrei that the "security problem is basic and it should be solved in order that the Palestinian government will assume it responsibilities."
Worthy mentioning the Roadmap calls on the Palestinian authority to take measures against the Palestinian resistance groups as a precondition to resume the negotiations.
For his part, Qrei stressed the need that Israel should stop building "the wall" in the lands of the West Bank, considering that this wall constitutes a "new method for confiscating the Palestinian lands by Israel." Qrei arrived in Jordan on Wednesday coming from Egypt which was the first country he had visited since he assumed the presidency of the Palestinian government in the beginning of this month.
Worthy mentioning that al-Aqaba meeting is the first of its kind between the Jordanian king and Qrei since the latter assumed his new post.
