National dialogue starts today upon directives of Mubarak
Egypt, Politics, 10/22/2003
Egypt's Secretary General of the National Democratic Party (NDP) and Minister of Information Safwat Al Sherif will Wednesday evening hold a series of meetings with leaders of other parties to open a national dialogue with political powers in Egypt in compliance with the call made by President Hosni Mubarak, NDP Chairman, at the first NDP annual congress held late September.
Sherif will meet with the leader of Al Tagammu Party. This will be followed by a meeting with the leader of the Wafd Party. Sherif will meet with leaders of other parties next week.
Addressing Tuesday a meeting of trainees at the Leaders Institute at Helwan, south of Cairo, Sherif explained that President Mubarak's call to hold dialogue with the other parties aims at ensuring the participation of all institutions of civil society, notably parties.
Sherif said that the citizenship document which was presented at the NDP annual congress contained all rights and duties of citizens and it will be discussed in the dialogue with other parties in order to adopt an ideal citizenship document and agree on an ideal formula for elections.
The NDP Secretary General said that individual meetings with leaders of other parties will be followed by an overall dialogue among all parties. The NDP wishes to see strong national parties in Egypt and welcomes their active participation in order to enrich political action, he said.
This move confirms that the NDP does not claim guardianship on all ideas and views, he added. As regards the role of youth, Sherif said the NDP aims at reaching all youth without having students embroiled in political struggle. Students can practice their political rights outside universities, he said.
