le Matin du Sahara et du Maghreb: Chaves pleads for special status for Morocco in its relations with EU
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 10/18/2003
President of the local government of Andalusia (Southern Spain), Manuel Chaves, has pleaded for a "special status" to be granted to Morocco in its relations with the European Union (EU), in an interview, Friday, with Moroccan daily "le Matin du Sahara et du Maghreb."
"I personally plead for a special status for Morocco in its relations with the European Union" said Chaves, who urged the European Commission to finance projects with bordering countries, such as Morocco.
This special status, he said, is the only means to deal with outstanding issues between Morocco and the EU, including fisheries.
Chaves also called for new formulas of partnership with Moroccan economic operators.
On the very sensitive immigration issue, Chavez wished that this problem "be ultimately resolved at the next meeting of the joint Moroccan-Spanish committee set for December.
"There is a key word for this: organizing immigration flow between Morocco and Spain and consequently between Morocco and Andalusia," said the Spanish leader who pleaded for "the integration of Moroccan nationals into the Spanish society in a legal way."
Chaves also said that the cultural heritage shared by Morocco and Andalusia can be used as "a facilitator" not only for relations between Morocco and Spain but also with the European Union.
