Morocco wants solution to Sahara that respects Morroco's legitimate claim
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 10/15/2003

Moroccan foreign minister told the Moroccan daily "Assahra Al-Maghribya." "We wish that our Maghreban brothers, in particular our Algerian brothers, understand that Morocco is sincerely willing to reach a just and a realistic settlement of this conflict based on the legitimate claim of the kingdom."

Meantime, Member of the Consultative Council for Sahrawi Affairs, Rachid Douihi rejected, in an interview published by Chilean daily "El Mercurio" the draft peace plan on the Sahara prepared by personal envoy of the United Nations' Secretary General, James Baker, because, he said, "it undermines the Moroccan identity and the unity of our people."

Baker's proposal does not respect "our constitution, borders, territorial integrity and allegiance to the throne which are sacred," Douihi stressed in the interview titled "the Populations of Southern Provinces reject Peace Plan because it will Create Unending Wars."

"Should the plan be implemented, this may lead to unending conflicts and will provoke great problems not only in our country but in the whole region," the Sahrawi dignitary added.

Douihi who recently visited, with a delegation of Moroccan southern provinces, Chili and Mexico to raise awareness of the public opinion about the reasons of Sahrawis' rejection of Baker's latest proposal, underlined that the plan "is in contradiction with the United Nations' previous resolutions" concerning Morocco's territorial integrity.

Asked about Algeria's interest in supporting the mercenaries of the Polisario (a guerrilla movement claiming the independence of Moroccan southern provinces), Douihi explained that Algeria "has always been dreaming of a leadership in North west Africa and the support to the Polisario is a springboard to make this dream come true."

After (former Spanish president) Franco's failure to separate the Sahara from Morocco and create a micro state, Algerians, unfortunately, showed up with their maneuvers and colonialist aims, the Sahrawi dignitary deplored.
