Al-Barazani asks Egypt's support for the governing council
Iraq-Egypt, Politics, 10/14/2003
Leader of the Kurdistani Democratic party in Iraq Masoud al-Barazani in Cairo yesterday asked for the support of the Iraqi Interim governing council.
Al-Barazani said following his meeting with the Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Maher "we have asked Egypt for moral and political support to the Interim Governing Council and support for the Iraqi people so as to be able to eliminate hindering obstacles."
Al-Barazani renewed his objection to send Turkish forces to Iraq considering that this will "increase the problem." On Saturday, al-Barazani met with the Secretary General of the Arab league AL Amr Moussa and asked him for the support of the AL concerning dispatching Turkish forces to Iraq.
For his part Maher said that al-Barazani stressed that the "Kurds are careful to maintain Iraq's unity and sovereignty and for Iraqis to manage out their own affairs by themselves as soon as possible." Maher explained that he called for "more authority to the Iraqi people according to the decision of the Arab League which Egypt contributed to its issuance, through accepting the Iraqi governing council to occupy Iraq's seat temporarily."
