Lahoud meets with Larsen on ME developments
Lebanon-UN, Politics, 10/9/2003

The Lebanese President Emile Lahoud on Wednesday said that Syria and Lebanon's resort to the UN Security Council following continued Israeli violations and the aggression on the Syrian lands is a procedure that expresses unshaken trust in the international community's ability to curb the logic of force and prevent repetition of the Israeli aggression.

During a meeting with the UN Envoy to the Middle East Terje Roed-Larsen and the UN Secretary-General Personal Envoy to South Lebanon Stefan De Mistura, President Lahoud said "Israeli aggressions are only justified in the state of madness of the Israeli leaders and their attempt to get around the main problem which is the occupation of other countries' lands by force in defiance of the international resolutions."

The Lebanese president added that Lebanon has never been the aggressor, and Israel is the party that has always rejected to abide by the UN resolutions. Just and comprehensive peace constitutes the only guarantee to secure an atmosphere of stability and security for all the parties in the Middle East, he underlined.

President Lahoud asked Larsen to covey his country's position to the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, calling on the international organization, in cooperation with the world's effective powers, to make further efforts to curb and condemn the aggressor.

Larsen on his part stressed in a statement after the meeting that the Israeli aggression on Syria from Lebanon is a dangerous turning point, describing his presence in Beirut as a response to Annan's directives to discuss with the Lebanese officials how to diffuse the current tension in the region.

Larsen indicated that the UN has strongly condemned the Israeli aggression which added to the already tense and very difficult situation and in the Middle East, expressing concern that this aggression could extend the current conflict in the Middle East and threaten peace and security in the whole region.

The international envoy pointed out to the praise shown by Annan over the "wise response of Syria and Lebanon towards the Israeli aggression through their call to the return to the UN." He also called on Israel not to use force and to stop violating Lebanese airspace.
