Moroccan political parties express support to Syria, condemn Israeli aggression
Morocco-Syria, Politics, 10/8/2003

Political parties in Morocco expressed support to Syria and condemned Israel following the air strike it carried out Sunday inside the Syrian territory.

A delegation representing political parties said during a meeting, here Tuesday with Syrian ambassador to Morocco, Youssef Joumoua, they are "deeply concerned" about the consequences of this military escalation on security and stability in the Middle East.

"We condemn this aggression perpetrated by Israel against the Syrian Arab Republic and we are keen to express solidarity with the brotherly people of Syria in this difficult juncture," said the delegation, recalling that Morocco strongly condemned the Israeli aggression as "an acceptable act that is in total contradiction with the international law."

The kingdom exhorted Sunday the United Nations Security Council to take the adequate measures to stop any escalation of violence in the Middle East, requiring Israel to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria.

On Monday, King Mohammed VI denounced on a phone call with Syrian president, Bashar Al-Assad the Israeli air raid and reiterated solidarity with Syria.

Joumoua said he is "very touched" by the solidarity expressed by different Moroccan parties with his country, underscoring that "Morocco always had heroic stances as regards Syria."

"I am afraid the Israeli raid against Syria is only the prelude of an escalation aiming to destabilize the region under the cloak of war against terrorism," he deplored adding that attempts are made to silence Syria that rejects the solutions imposed on it and remains nonetheless open to dialogue and attached to international law.

Syria, he noted, "was among the first countries to call for an international conference to give a definition to terrorism and fight the scourge at the world scale."
