Iraqi council studies mechanism to draw the constitution

Member of the Interim Governing Council in Iraq Mahmoud Othman has stressed that the council will be meeting today to discuss several recommendations on the new constitution in the country.
In press statements in Baghdad yesterday, Othman said that the council will discuss a report drawn by a preliminary committee assigned to formulate a mechanism for drafting constitution last week.
He added that three options were submitted to this committee: the first is for carrying out partial elections in the Iraqi provinces, the second is to make general elections, while the third recommends to appoint certain members of the constitutional council which will be assigned to write the constitution together with a group of specialists in this regard.
Another member in the council Nasir al-Jaderi said that the preliminary committee recommended also of making a census in Iraq in order to facilitate the elections process.
The committee had submitted its recommendations last Tuesday following 22 days of consultations with various social strata in the Iraqi society with all its political, religious and vocational trends.
