Sudan, Uganda extends an agreement for security cooperation
Sudan-Uganda, Politics, 10/7/2003

Sudan and Uganda have renewed an agreement for security cooperation aiming at the expulsion of Ugandan rebels from southern Sudan after Kampala has accused its northern neighbor of resuming support for the rebels.

Uganda's defense minister said he had met with the Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, noting that he had agreed to extend the agreement which allow the Ugandan army to chase al-Rab army for resistance inside Southern Sudan. The said agreement expired in September.

The Ugandan minister explained that the special protocol pertains to this cooperation will be renewed for a one month period. He added that the "Sudanese government considers al-Rab army for resistance as an enemy to Sudan and decided to liquidate it." This is, however, the ninth time in which the agreement which was signed in March 2002, is renewed.

In June this year, Uganda's president accused Khartoum of arming al-Rab army for resistance secretly and warned that any support for the rebels will threaten "a basic change in the relations between the two neighboring countries."

Uganda's president deployed more than 14,000 soldiers of his forces, backed by helicopters and tanks against the rebels of the al-Rab army for resistance in 2002. However, the rebels continued their activities there.

Uganda in September accused Sudan of resuming its aid to the rebels. Khartoum denied these accusations and said it will deal seriously with officers suspected to be cooperating with al-Rab army. The rebels, led by Joseph Kony say they are fighting to topple the Ugandan president, but never discuss their demands openly in details.
