Al-Qathafi calls on Libyans to approve quitting the Arab League
Libya-Regional, Politics, 10/6/2003

Libya's Leader of the Revolution Colonel Muammar al Qathafi has repeated his country's request to withdraw from the Arab League, expressing his disappointment to in reforming the current Arab position and disseminating the spirit of cooperation among the Arab states in support of the Iraqi and Palestinian issues.

In a speech he delivered on the occasion of the 42nd anniversary of a demonstration he had held in protest of the separation between Egypt and Syria in the Libyan city of Sabha, Qathafi said "for the second or one thousand times, I appeal the Libyan people to agree on the withdrawal from the Arab League, without wasting time."

Qathafi called on the people's congresses to "approve Libya's withdrawal from the Arab League." This idea has been debated in Libya since several months and has not yet achieved.

Qathafi accused the Arab states of giving up on the Iraqi and Palestinian people, and not standing beside them, registering "a historical shame that cannot be forgotten."

Qathafi considered that "any country which is not united under the banner of its nationalism will not have a future," noting that the "Arabs failed to achieve an Arab unity." The Libyan leader indicated that his efforts to unify his country with Egypt, Sudan, Algeria and other Arab states had gone with the wind until "Globalization had joined us." Qathafi accused the Arabs of having rallied with the USA and the Jews against his country. He said that Tripoli's new inclination towards the African states will be a source of great power for his country.

Libya had announced its withdrawal from the Arab League before and had frozen this request after it had received Arab promises to new programs and reforms to revitalize common Arab action within the context of the Arab League.
