Mrs. Mubarak opens German Cultural Festival
Egypt-Germany, Culture, 10/4/2003
Egypt's First Lady Suzanne Mubarak opened the German Cultural Festival 2003, which is hosted by Cairo and Alexandria on October 2-23 with the aim of boosting bridges of cultural dialogue between Egypt and Germany.
The opening ceremony was held late Thursday at the Cairo Opera House. This festival coincides with inauguration of the German-Arab Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GACIC).
The festival is sponsored by the German Goethe Institute and a number of German and Egyptian foundations. Mrs. Mubarak witnessed a ballet show by the Stuttgart Troupe at the big theatre of the Opera House.
German Ambassador in Cairo Martin Koebler delivered a welcome speech saying "The festival will continue for three weeks to spotlight aspects of artistic and cultural life of Germans," he added. The ambassador said that the great Egyptian civilization has special charm for Germans, noting that Egypt has a number of German foundations specialized in education and scientific research and they are representing key connection points between the two countries.
He also noted that the inauguration of the German University in Cairo (GUC) by President Hosni Mubarak and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder Sunday is a key aspect for activities shared by the two countries.
