Sudanese opposition asks for participation amid optimism in peace

Leaders of the northern opposition in Sudan have asked Sudanese Vice President Ali Othman Muhammad Taha, currently in Cairo to join the current peace talks between Khartoum and southern rebels to reach a comprehensive peace agreement in the country.
In a statement, the Sudanese Umma party al-Sadeq al-Mahdi asked for the participation of all Sudanese political forces in the next talks in order to reach a comprehensive settlement that avails solving of all pending issues, including the sharing of authority and resources especially oil revenues.
The statement was issued on Wednesday in conclusion of a meeting held between al-Mahdi and the Sudanese Vice President, currently visiting Cairo during which he briefed the leader of the Sudanese opposition on the security agreement concluded in Kenya with the southern rebels Sudan.
The agreement which is set for 6 years and covers a provisional period for after-war period in southern Sudan, states in particular the withdrawal of the government forces from this area under an international sponsorship. The talks are presumed to resume on October 6th on impeding issues especially the sharing of authority and resources especially oil revenues.
A spokesman for the Democratic Unionist party said that the Sudanese Vice President briefed Othman al-Meirghani the leader of the party and the leader of the Democratic National Coalition, the coalition which includes the northern opposition and the southern rebels on the details of the agreement. Al-Meirghani Expressed his "hope that the agreement will be converted to a comprehensive political settlement including all Sudanese political forces and linked to the democratic process."
