Tunisians sentenced to imprisonment over terrorism accusations in Belgium
Tunisia-Belgium, Local, 10/1/2003

A Belgian court issued a ten year imprisonment sentence against the former Tunisian football player Nizar al-Trabulsi and six year for Tareq al- Maroufi in the framework of a trial including 23 accused persons tried on charge of being members in al-Qaida organization and of carrying out terrorist acts.

Al-Trabulsi confessed before the court during his trial in May and June this year of planning for blowing off the military Kleini Brogul base Northern East Belgium in 2001, where American soldiers are accommodated and suspected to have nuclear weapons.

The Attorney General said that he had met with the leader of al-Qaida organization Osama Bin Laden for several times in Afghanistan before he had accepted the said mission. Al-Trabulsi's lawyers asked for being lenient with their client because he did not implement the plans of the attacks and because since his detention he has been denouncing strongly all sorts of violence.

Al-Trabulsi ( 33 year old) who used to play for the German Fortana Dosildov Football Team in the 1980s was arrested following the attacks of September 11 against the USA.

For his part al-Maroufi denied accusations addressed to him and the most remarkable of them is being a member in al-Qaida organization and planning to assassinate the former Afghani military leader Ahmad Shah Massoud, but he only admitted to being a member in Tunisian Islamic organizations.
