Sahrawi dignitary satisfied with European MPs and officials' support to morocco
Morocco-European Union, Politics, 9/29/2003
A Sahrawi dignitary who led a delegation of representatives of Moroccan Sahrawi populations said, at the end of a tour to several European countries, he was satisfied with the support displayed by European MPs and officials to Morocco.
Brahim Hakim, a former "foreign minister" of the so-called "Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic" self-proclaimed by the Polisario, (a separatist movement claiming independence of the former Spanish colony) told MAP bureau in Berlin that the delegation was "encouraged by what we have heard during our different talks and by the support shown to Morocco."
A roving Ambassador, Hakim who is also member of the (Moroccan) Consultative Council for Saharan Affairs, said the officials and MPs he met in the visited countries (France, Great Britain and Germany) "value the progress made by our country in promoting democracy since king Mohammed VI acceded to the throne ."
The delegation who expounded to European officials, MPS and non-governmental organizations the reasons why the sahrawi populations are rejecting the latest plan drafted by James Baker, former US Secretary of State and personal envoy of UN Secretary General for the Sahara. He said in this regard that any solution to this conflict that does not cater for Morocco's full sovereignty of Morocco over this territory would not be accepted by the local population.
"We are the sons of our ancestors who had from time immemorial been tireless soldiers to protect the unity and the integrity of the Kingdom, and who had always been very attached to the long-standing and indestructible links that have always existed between the inhabitants of the southern provinces and the throneČ, he said insisting that Morocco's case will triumph.
The Baker's peace proposal is being rejected by the local Sahrawi population for it prevents the majority of them from voting in a hypothetical referendum on the future of this territory retrieved by Morocco in 1975 under a three-party agreement signed by Spain, Morocco and Mauritania.
