Al-Sherif to NDP Congress: Keenness on reform, modernization
Egypt, Politics, 9/27/2003

In his speech to the NDP Annual Congress, Egypt's NDP Secretary General said that the Party and the government give great attention to boost growth of the Egyptian economy by means of measures to reform financial, tax and investment policies.

"The NDP supports the government's policies for achieving stability at the market in a serious and efficient way so as to control rises in prices of essential commodities," Al-Sherif said.

"This emanates from our belief that the one-party concept and the centrally controlled economy is over and will not return," he said. Still, he said, the government would continue playing a role in safeguarding social harmony."

Al-Sherif later presented a report on the Party's policies, including the government's plans to reform the national economy and accelerate growth rate as recommended by the International Monetary Fund.
