Two men get death penalty in terrorism trial

Two men were sentenced Thursday evening to capital punishment by the court of appeal of Rabat, as part of the anti-terrorism law enacted few days after last May 16 terrorist attacks in Casablanca that left 45 people dead, including 12 suicide bombers and injured scores of others.

Abdelouahab Rabii, alias Rebaa, confessed on Thursday the killing by "strangulation and mutilation" of a civil servant from the ministry of justice with the complicity of three other individuals wanted by justice. He also confessed having stolen weapons in an army barracks in Taza, (northeast of Rabat) with the complicity of a serviceman who stole seven Kalashnikovs that he intended to use for terrorist acts against Jewish sites.

The other man sentenced to death penalty is Hamid Slimani.

The court of appeal of Rabat handed down sentences between 2 and 20 years against 11 members of the same group.

One defendant was handed down a 20 year prison sentence, one to ten years, five to five years, four to two years while one person was acquitted.

The "Rebaa" group was sued for criminal association to perpetrate terrorist acts, endangering the life of a person part of a collective plan to jeopardize public order, inciting to terrorist acts, undermining the state's internal security, assault to cause destruction and killings and intention to damage state institutions.

The group was also prosecuted for complicity in stealing, swindling, use of fake administrative documents, and activities within an unauthorized association.
