Israeli settler killed in Palestinian operation; Quartet makes another unheeded request to both sides
Palestine-Israel, Military, 9/27/2003

Just two days before the Palestinian Intifada completes its fourth year, one Palestinian succeeded in breaking the siege imposed by the Israeli occupation forces against the West Bank and Gaza, on the fall of the New Jewish year.

The Palestinian was able to gain access to a settlement near Hebron, where he killed one settler and wounded other three before he was killed by the occupation army.

The attack came under a comprehensive siege imposed by the occupation army against the West Bank and Gaza out of fears of attacks on the occasion of the Jewish new year.

Meantime, the so-called Quartet group called on the Palestinians to move against resistance groups and called also on Israel to halt the settlements. The committee met yesterday on the sideline of the meetings of the UN General Assembly in New York in the presence of the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and the US Secretary Of State Colin Powell, Russia's Igore Ivanonv; Italy Franco Frattini whose country presides over the current rotating presidency of the European Union and the official in charge of the EU foreign policy Javier Solana.

In a statement issued in conclusion of the meeting "members of the committee stressed that the two sides have to exert more efforts immediately and simultaneously in order to ease the other sides fears." The statement added that the committee "asks the Palestinians to take immediate and decisive measures against individuals and groups which carry out violent attacks."

The committee also called on Israel to "halt its settlement activities" in line with the Roadmap plan, devised by the Quartet in order to settle the Israeli- Palestinian conflict.

The committee approved of "Israel's right to defend itself" while calling on the Israeli government to alleviate the humanitarian and economic sufferings of the Palestinians and the need of halt settlement as stated in the Roadmap. The committee expressed its concern over the seperation wall which is under construction in the West Bank especially as it is conducive to confiscating the Palestinian lands and cutting the movement of persons and commodities and weakening the trust of the Palestinians in the Roadmap."
