Algeria releases of director of Le Soire D' Algiers

The Algerian authorities yesterday released the director of " Le Soir De Algiers" Fouad Bu Ghanem after he was detained earlier in the capital Algiers in a measure which is the most recent carried out by the government to pursue the private papers which oppose the Algerian President Abdul Aziz Butaflika, at a time when the national committee for saving freedom warned against an organized campaign to suppress the freedom of opinion and expression in Algeria.

" Le Soir De Algiers " said that Bu Ghanem was released and journalists had gathered in front of the general commission in the capital in protest of his detention. They are, in particular, the chief editor and the secretary general of the national trade unions for the press; this, following investigation with them at the police central commission in the capital.

The national committee for supporting freedom said in a statement that the "political authority wants to suppress freedom of expression and opinion." The committee which was formed recently by media officials and Algerian political figures warned "the international public opinion against these grave threats which undermine democracy in Algeria."

Some 10 papers which met in Algiers last Sunday and decided to declare September 22nd as "a day without press" because of the continued "attacks against the press and the freedom of expression in Algeria."

A forum including "national, social and political forces will be meeting soon." Officials at these papers said in a statement that delegations will be also sent to international organizations "to notify them on the dangers of freedom violations in Algeria."
