Paris accepts 'declaration of intentions' from Libya on plane bombing compensation
Libya-France, Politics, 9/12/2003
Sanctions to be lifted today from Libya France yesterday paved the way before lifting international sanctions imposed on Libya in a voting which is presumed today at the UN security council, when it announced an agreement finalized by families of the victims of the French Uta plane which was downed in the airspace of the Greater Desert in 1989 and between International Charity Foundation Kaddafi led by his son.
French Minister of Foreign Affairs Dominique de Villepin announced yesterday officially that Paris has no further objection to lifting the sanctions after families of the victims have reached an agreement, which Libya had also confirmed.
He said "I have just talked to the representatives of the families of the victims of the UTA 772 bombing. We have had many meetings over the past few weeks. As you know, the French authorities have been fully mobilized, at President Chirac's instigation, at their side. I welcome the agreement which was concluded with the Gadhafi Foundation last night with a view to a fair settlement of this painful affair which involves, as you know, passengers of seventeen nationalities: not just French, but also African, American and British."
De Villpin said in a joint press conference with families of Uta plane "France has further opposition to voting of the UN security council to lift the sanctions against Libya as soon as possible in New York."
He added that he has already notified British and American peers Jack Straw and Colin Powell of the agreement. He hoped the agreement reached with al-Qathafi foundation will open a new page between France and Libya.
Citizens from 17 countries especially from Africa " Congo, Chad, central Africa and Cameroon " were killed as well as westerners form ( France, Italy, Britain and the USA.).
