Al-Assad confers with Cypriot official

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad received on Thursday the leader of the Cyprus Socialist Party, Yanakis Omiro and an accompanying delegation

The meeting was attended by Assistant secretary general of the Baath Party in Syria Abdullah al-Ahmar.

Talks during the meeting dealt with bilateral relations between the two parties and the two countries.

The two sides reviewed the current situation on the regional and international arenas particularly the situation in Iraq and in the occupied Palestinian territories and the Cyprus Socialist Party's stance towards them since Cyprus will joint the European Union next year.

President al-Assad stressed the important role of the UN and its charter in solving the international disputes and that role which the UN should restored in order to achieve peaceful solutions that lead to security and stability in the Middle East and the world.

Al-Assad stressed that "we need, in the Middle East, the international role as well as the international role needs our point of views."
