Jordanian king to meet Bush; halting Israeli provocation a must for Qrei's success
Jordan-USA, Politics, 9/12/2003

The Jordanian King Abdullah II said yesterday that his next week's visit to the US aims at "ensuring support for the Palestinian position" amid the current deterioration of conditions, noting that the US has to pressure Israel to stop its provocations of the Palestinians, should it seek the success of the Ahmad Qrei government.

The Jordanian king will be meeting with the US President George W. Bush on Friday 19 in "a Jordanian attempt to urge the American administration to hurry the implementation of the Roadmap." He added that he will discuss during the five day visit "the question of supporting and providing success for the Palestinian government," warning against the danger of inter- Palestinian "rivalry and conflict which does not serve the Palestinian question." The White House said that Bush will receive at Camp David the Jordanian King "the friend who is close to the US and the partner in the war against terrorism and in the Middle East peace process."

In a press interview, the Jordanian king said yesterday that he will make "all necessary efforts to help the Iraqi people establishing a democratic and modern Iraq," adding that Jordan will also play the necessary role at the international arena to guarantee Iraq's security and stability, which are necessary for the security of the region as a whole. Abdullah said that the issue of sending forces to Iraq at the meantime, is considered "a sensitive issue, but other countries might be able to play a constructive role for the short run."

The Jordanian King stressed that his country will support the government of Ahmad Qrei, the same way "we have supported the government of Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas)." But he stressed that if the US wants this government to succeed "there should be pressure on Israel to stop its provocations and the policy of assassination to ensure its security and prevent more attacks on its civilians."
