Qrei accepts the formation of a mini emergency government

Ahmad Qrei announced his official consent to assume the post of the prime minister in the Palestinian Authority. He said following a meeting with the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat in his residence in Ramullah that he will form an emergency government to get out of the current crisis.

Qrei explained that his government will include 6 to 8 ministers only and he will invite for an urgent meeting for the Palestinian legislative council to approve his proposal to from this mini government.

Qrei added he will also form a national security council with a limited number of people that make all decisions of relevance to security affairs. He said "we are passing a historical moment and a turning point needs awareness and preciseness and needs a responsibility from our side and the Israeli side, alike."

Earlier, the new Palestinian prime minister called on Israel to resume the talks with the Palestinians if it wants to end what he called violence. He said "killing of Palestinians and getting into the cycle of violence will not help Israel to get security." In this regard, the European Union special envoy to the Middle East Marc Oti expressed his hope that the forthcoming Palestinian government will follow the step of its predecessor.

Oti noted following his meeting with prime minister Ahmad Qrei to security reforms Abbas wanted to implement and his efforts to execute the Roadmap plan. The EU official renewed the opposition of the EU of Israel's threats to expel President Yasser Arafat.
