Some 300,000 people live in shantytowns in Casablanca region
Morocco, Economics, 9/10/2003
Around 300,000 people are living in shantytowns in the region of Casablanca, home to 370 slums and 53,915 shacks.
A survey conducted by the statistics department of the ministry of economic forecasts and planning finds that 57,463 families, accounting for 8.8% of the region's total urban families, are living in shantytowns scattered throughout the region of Casablanca.
The study also notes that efforts to remedy the situation are hampered by the shrinking land availability and families' low purchasing power.
