Qrei: I will not be a prime minister under the Israeli instructions
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 9/10/2003

The designated Palestinian prime minister Ahmad Qrei said yesterday that he will not assume the post "under the Israeli instructions" to launch a campaign against resistance men faced by his predecessor Mahmoud Abbas.

In the context of his announcement of conditions to accept this post, Qrei urged Israel to stop its attempt to isolate the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat and stop attacks against Palestinian resistance. Qrei who met with Abbas who submitted his resignation on Saturday said "I informed the Americans, the Arabs and the Russians. I have informed all that the situation cannot continue. I will not be subjected to the Israeli instructions. Do this and do not do that."

Qrei also called for a ceasefire agreement between the Palestinian authority and Israel instead of another truce to be announced unilaterally by the Palestinian groups. He said that the Palestinian leaders are committed to peaceful coexistence with Israel as stated by the Roadmap plan.

He indicated that due to standing conditions on the ground and the way Israel treats the elected President for the Palestinian people, "I can not achieve any progress." He said that there are "conditions to work for the sake of peace. I want from the Israelis to work for peace, rather by the logic of power and influence," noting that "should this be available I will work for peace. Because if I win social support due to certain debated opportunities. If I win the support of President Arafat who is currently besieged and is I guarantee the support of the Quartet committee -- things will move."

Meantime, Arafat's advisor for security Jibril al-Rajjoub said that the success of Qrei government depends on lifting the siege from Arafat as an introduction to end the Israeli occupation.
