Al-Faisal: They tried to attack me
Saudi Arabia-Libya, Politics, 9/10/2003
The Egyptian attorney general decided yesterday to jail the two Libyan businessmen Mahmoud al-Bashir and Fatehi al-Masaad for four days for inquiries on their attempt to attack the Saudi Arabian foreign minister Prince Saud al-Faisal in the lobby of the hotel in Cairo on Monday evening where he was residing, before he had headed to the headquarters of the Arab League to attend the meetings of the Arab foreign ministers.
Al-Faisal confirmed yesterday the attack attempt against him saying "they intended to attack me, but the young men ( around him ) prevented this."
Egyptian security sources said that the two young men described Saudi Arabia as a hireling for the US. Sources close to the investigations said the two convicted persons face a sentence of two- year imprisonment and both of them to be fined if they are found guilty before the minor crimes court.
According to a police official, the two Libyans wanted to restore back dignity to their leader who was attacked by the Saudi Crown Prince during the Arab summit which was held in Sharm Esh Sheikh in March this year.
