Spain extends the detention of an al-Jazeera journalist
Regional-Spain, Local, 9/9/2003

A Judicial source in Madrid said that Judge Paltsar Ghartoun yesterday extended the detention of Teiseir Allouni, a journalist for the Qatari al-Jazeera TV for three more days for investigation on charge of establishing a relation with al-Qaida organization in Spain.

The attorney asked for this detention period in order to get information from the police about the likely information between the journalist and the organization of Osama Bin Laden. According to the judicial source, Allouni denied any direct link to al-Qaida.

However, the maximum period for imprisonment without directing an accusation in the context of issues relating to terrorism is 6 days.

Allouni, who is of Syrian origin and carries the Spanish nationality was detained last Friday in Granada district to the south of Spain in the last day of his vacation before his return back to his work place in Qatar with his family. He was taken to Madrid where he was held in a cell inside the police headquarters in Kanyas to northern East of Madrid.

According to Judicial sources, Judge Ghartoun questioned him over his relations with Imad Eddine Barakat Jarkas, better known as Abu Dahdah who is suspected to be al-Qaida official in Spain and was arrested in November 2001 with a large number of persons accused to belong to extremist Islamic organizations.
