Khaddam, al-Shara meets with Obeid
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 9/8/2003

Vice- President Abdul Halim Khaddam received yesterday Lebanese Foreign Minister Jean Obeid on the situation in Iraq and its repercussions on the region.

The two sides' points of view were identical regarding the need to support the Iraqi people in restoring their sovereignty and choosing their independent government without any foreign interference.

Talks also dealt with the situation in the Palestinian territories, the Israeli acts against the Palestinians, and the necessity for boosting the Palestinian national unity.

Meantime, Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara received on Sunday Jean Obeid. Talks also dealt with the forthcoming meeting of the Arab League Council on the level of Foreign Ministers scheduled to be held in Cairo.

The two ministers stressed the necessity for adoption of a unified stance by the Arab Foreign Ministers towards Arab causes, particularly what is connected with the Iraqi people's aspirations.

In a statement to reporters following the meeting, Obeid underlined that his talks with al-Shara focused on the mechanism of coordination of Arab stance in facing the latest developments of the current stage and their repercussions on the Arab and international arenas. He expressed the hope that the forthcoming meeting of the Arab Foreign Ministers will realize positive results in the interest of strengthening and activating the joint Arab action.
