Mauritania opposition call for not voting for Weld Taye'

Some 20 Mauritanian opposition members in exile have called in a statement on their citizens not to vote for the current President of Mauritania Mu'aweya Wild Taye', the candidate for the presidential elections to be held on September 7th.

The signatories of the statement which is called September 7th appeal called for ensuring transparent elections way and called on citizens to use all traditional or advanced communications means in order to deplore attempts to falsify these elections.

The statement called on the opposition forces and the army to refuse all forms of exploitation by the existing authority and called on the Mauritanians abroad to urge their families not to relelect the current president. They called on declared opposition candidates to not work for undermining the unity of the opposition forces.

The statement urged all organizations and commissions concerned to justice and democracy to help Mauritania by sending a large number of observers and pressuring the current regime to honor transparency and results of the elections. Among signatories of the statement is the former parliamentarian Abdullah Kubei and the two opposition members Muhammad Mahmoud Weld Ma'loum and Muhammad Baba.

The number of candidates for the presidential elections in Mauritanian are so far six including the current president who assumed power in 1984 following a coupe. He was elected as a president in 1992 and was also reelected in 1997.

The other candidates are former President Muhammad Khona Wild Hedalah, the opposition member Ahmad Weld Dadah and the two former candidates Mawlai Hassan Weld Hayed, Mauritania's businessman Weslmo Weld Mustafa and the former female member at the ruling party Aesha Mint Jaddan which had nominated herself independently.

The elections will be held officially on October 22 through November 6th this year.
