Security Council calls for release of all Moroccan prisoners still held in Algeria

The United Nations Security Council on Wednesday welcomed the release on Monday by the Algeria-backed Polisario separatist movement of 243 Moroccan prisoners of war, and called on the group to immediately release all remaining POWs.
In a statement to the press, current Council President Ambassador Emyr Jones Parry of the United Kingdom, said the 15-nation body "reaffirmed the Council's call in resolution 1495 that the group releases without further delay all remaining POWs in compliance with international humanitarian law."
On Tuesday, U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan called for the liberation of all Moroccan prisoners who are still detained in Algeria. Annan hailed the release of 243 Moroccan prisoners who were held in Algeria and their repatriation to Morocco by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
The UN chief exhorted, nonetheless, "parties to continue cooperation with the ICRC to determine the fate of all those who have disappeared since the outset of the conflict."
On Monday, the ICRC reiterated a call for the "immediate" release of the 914 remaining prisoners detained by the "Polisario" in the Tindouf camps (southwestern Algeria).
It also expressed concern about the deteriorating health of those still in captivity.
