New Israeli ambassador to Jordan
Jordan-Israel, Politics, 9/5/2003

Jordan yesterday received the new Israeli ambassador accredited to it Yaqoub Haddas, as an expression of partial continuity of diplomatic normalization relations with Israel.

Jordan has not sent its ambassador to Tel Aviv since 2000, while Israel has maintained its diplomatic links to Amman, Yaqoub Haddas who used to assume the post of chairman of the Israeli trade Liaison office in Qatar, in the place of former ambassador who was transferred to Mexico. In February this year, Israel appointed Haddas as its new ambassador in the Kingdom.

The Jordanian news agency said that Haddas ( 46 year old) submitted a copy of his credentials immediately upon his arrival in Jordan to the Jordanian foreign minister Marwan Mausher who stressed the "need of exerting efforts to give the ME peace process a push forward and implement the roadmap which will end the occupation and found the independent Palestinian state." According to the Jordanian diplomatic protocol, handing over a copy of the credentials of an ambassador to the foreign minister is considered the first phase in accrediting the new ambassador in the Kingdom who will assume his missions only after his credentials are submitted to the Jordanian King. According to a source at the Jordanian foreign ministry, the King is presumed to receive the credentials of the new Israeli ambassador by the beginning of next week.

Haddas, however, is the fourth Israeli ambassador to Jordan, appointed since the agreement on Jordan's recognition of Israel in 1994. A process which was followed by economic normalization one year later.

Haddas speaks Arabic fluently. He was born in Tel Aviv and has a degree in Middle East studies.
