Governing council is persistent to be presented at AL, differences over the American proposal
Iraq-Regional, Politics, 9/5/2003
Differences emerged among members of the Iraqi Interim Council between supporter and opposers of the American proposal on Iraq to the UN security council, while the Iraqi governing council stressed determination to take part in the coming meeting of the Arab states due to be held on Tuesday in Cairo.
Member of the council Muwafak al- Rubei said "we support this inclination and more than that we want a greater role for the UN in Iraq. We have repeatedly stressed the need that the UN should play a greater role in Iraq." He added that "we do hope that certain countries will support this proposal especially France, Germany and Japan."
He indicated that adopting this new American proposal will have positive results especially on security. However, member of the council Ghazi Ojeil Elyawer criticized the American proposal considering that this "will convert Iraq into a circus playground."He said "the most important that they will give us the chance to build national security forces, as the foreign forces can not contribute to ensuring internal security in Iraq." Elyawer questioned "How can an Indian or a Thai contribute to keeping internal peace in Iraq."
Meanwhile, the governing council said in a statement yesterday that it had decided in a meeting held on Wednesday to "assign Iraq's foreign minister Hoshiar Muhammad Zeibar to address a memorandum to the AL secretary general Amr Mousa in which he expressed Iraq's determination to take part in the meetings of the AL council next Tuesday." The statement explained that the "council will send later ( to the AL) names of the chairman and members of the delegation."
