Abdul Aziz al-Hakim presides over the higher council for the Islamic revolution
Iraq, Politics, 9/4/2003
Mohsin al-Hakim, son of member of the interim governing council Abdul Aziz al-Hakim said that his father was elected unanimously as a chairman for the party of the Higher Council For the Islamic Revolution in succession of his elder brother, the late Muhammad Baqer al-Hakim at a time when American forces besieged al-Sader's house.
Adel Abdul Mahdi, one of the officials in the political bureau of the party of the higher council for the Islamic revolution stressed the election of al-Hakim in a meeting held by members of the council's Shoura on Tuesday evening to choose a successor for Muhammad Baker al-Hakim who was killed in an explosion of two booby trapped cars in al-Najaf city on Friday.
He considered that the election of Abdul Aziz as a chairman for the higher council for the Islamic revolution will not affect his work in the interim governing council. He added that Abdul Aziz al-Hakim was the strongest candidate for succeeding his brother as he was the second ranking man in the higher council party.
In a later development, sources at the office of Imam al-Sader said that the American occupation forces besieged the house of the Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sader and tried to dismantle personal arms for the guards who cordon his house in al-Najaf.
Associates and supporters for al-Sader gathered around his house but the difference escalated and this obliged the Shiite leader to come out himself and negotiate with the American forces which withdrew.
Meantime, hundreds of al-Sader supporters are meeting now in al-Najaf to protect his house after the US forces said it will come back to the city carrying with it more forces and Iraqi police members.
In a most recent attack by the Iraqi resistance, four American soldiers were injured near the city of Takrit to the north of the capital Baghdad.
A spokeswoman for the occupation forces said that the four casualties resulted in the detonation of an explosive when an American military convoy was running near the city of Takrit. The attack took place on Tuesday evening.
