Failure of efforts to settle differences inside the Palestinian authority
Palestine, Politics, 9/4/2003
The Palestinian minister of information Nabil Amre said that the prime minister Mahmoud Abbas will notify the Palestinian legislative council that he will resign if he will not be given authorities to take necessary steps of the peace plan called the Roadmap.
He explained that "Abbas will ask for supporting his policies, otherwise he will resign." The Palestinian prime minister is to submit a detailed report to the council on Thursday in which he explains the achievements and failures of his government since its foundation and asks to be given confidence.
This, however, comes as Palestinian efforts failed to contain the escalated differences between President Yasser Arafat and the prime minister, although there are still efforts made to contain the crisis arising between the two men.
News reports in the Palestinian territories said that the meeting of the PLO executive committee which was presided over by Arafat and was not attended by Abbas concluded on Tuesday evening without reaching worthy results to settle the difference over who controls the security departments.
The central committee of the Palestinian national liberation movement ( Fatah ) had discussed a formula calling for founding a national security council composed of seven members to be headed by Arafat with Abbas taking part in it as a member.
Chairman of the Palestinian legislative council, Ahmad Qrei, warned in conclusion of the Fatah meeting of the consequences of the continued crisis between Arafat and Abbas under the Israeli threats. He urged the two sides to solve the difference before convening a session for the legislative council that might decide the fate of the Abbas government.
