Morocco-Israel, Politics, 9/3/2003
Israeli deputy prime minister and foreign affairs minister, Sylvan Shalom, on Tuesday lauded Morocco's "key role" in the Middle East peace process.
Morocco that is "very close to the Palestinians and to Israel should play a key role in the peace process," Shalom said at the end of an audience with King Mohammed VI.
The Israeli official, who handed King Mohammed VI a message from Prime Minister Aril Sharon, said he was convinced that his "meeting (with King Mohammed VI) will contribute to our efforts to achieve our goals."
"I am sure that the time has come for Israel and the Arab world to put an end to the conflict that existed for a long time," he said, adding that the audience with king Mohammed VI "will allow to get progress in our negotiations and dialogue with the Arab world."
According to the Israeli foreign minister, contacts that started between Morocco and Israel "will continue to keep good relations in the future."
For his part, Moroccan foreign affairs and cooperation minister, Mohamed Benaissa, said the meeting between King Mohammed VI and the Israeli official centered on the initiatives that Morocco can undertake on request of Palestinians and Israelis to reactivate the peace process on the bases of the road map.
"Morocco, as in the past, will remain attached to the peace process given the history of the kingdom in this field and the commitments taken part of its strategy in the region that aims to consolidate peace, security and stability in the Middle East," he said.
