King Mohammed renews attachment to fair, lasting peace in mideast
Morocco-Israel, Politics, 9/3/2003
Morocco's King Mohammed VI, President of the Al-Quds Committee, on Tuesday renewed Morocco's attachment to a fair, lasting and comprehensive peace in the Middle East, the Moroccan Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Department said in a release.
The king, who received the same day in Tetouan Israeli foreign minister Sylvan Shalom, reaffirmed Morocco's firm commitment to restoring security and stability for all the peoples and countries in the region.
King Mohammed VI laid a special emphasis on the issue of Al-Quds and on the dangers looming on the city's Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam's third holiest shrine after Mecca and Madina in Saudi Arabia.
The king stressed the importance for the Israeli government to contain the situation pending the outcome of negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis on the status of Al-Quds part of the road map.
King Mohammed VI voiced Morocco's readiness to positively answer the Palestinian and Israeli requests to continue discussions with them until the desired peace is achieved.
To this end, the Kingdom of Morocco studies the means to develop Moroccan-Israeli relations in such a way to ease Morocco's mission to fully play its role geared towards bridging the gap between Palestinians and Israelis.
Shalom, who handed to King Mohammed VI a message from Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon, discussed with the king the peace process and means to resume negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis on the basis of the road map.
