Maher in Khartoum: we reject to be just an observer
Egypt-Sudan, Politics, 9/2/2003

The Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Maher said yesterday that his country will not take part simply as an observer in the inter- Sudanese peace talks which will be held on September 20 in Kenya.

Following a meeting with the Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and the (First) Vice-President, Ali Othman Muhammad, Maher said that Egypt seeks to reach a peace agreement between the Sudanese government and the rebels that ensures the "unity of the country," stressing readiness to support peace efforts "by all appropriate and effective means."

For his part, the Sudanese foreign minister Mustafa Othman Ismael said that it "will be difficult" to reach an agreement in the coming phase of negotiations in Nairobi because of the continued differences, but he expressed hope that "this round will ensure the appropriate atmosphere to sign the agreement" later.

The Egyptian foreign minister handed over in Khartoum yesterday a message to the Sudanese President from his Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak. He said discussions with President al-Bashir dealt with "efforts to achieve peace and the contacts Egypt is making in support of the Sudanese position."
