Al-Assad meets with Cypriot FM
Syria-Cyprus, Politics, 9/2/2003

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad received in Damascus on Monday Cypriot Foreign Minister, Georgios Iacovou.

Talks during the meeting dealt with the historical relations between Syria and Cyprus, Cyprus role between the EU and the Middle East in addition to the situation in Iraq and in the occupied Palestine.

President al-Assad underlined the historical relations between Syria and Cyprus on the official and popular levels and in all domains.

al-Assad pointed out the necessity for cooperation among countries of the region to restore the UN role particularly regarding causes of the region.

For his Part, Iacovou stressed Cyprus' care to convey the region's issues to the EU pointing out that Cyprus will join the EU next May.

Meantime, Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara and Iacovou held official talks on Monday that centered on the latest developments in the region, particularly in Iraq and in the occupied Palestine and also touched upon the exerted efforts for solving the Cypriot issue where viewpoints were identical regarding the necessity for boosting the UN role in order to deal with the international issues in accordance with the international resolutions.

Both sides expressed content over development of the bilateral relations between Syria and Cyprus. Shara described the standing relations between Syria and Cyprus as excellent ones.
