Jordanian king visits Iran tomorrow for the first time
Jordan-Iran, Politics, 9/1/2003
An official in the Jordanian Royal palace said yesterday that the Jordanian King Abdullah II will pay a visit tomorrow ( Tuesday), his first visit, to Iran since he assumed rule in Jordan in 1999 to discuss conditions in the region and discuss bilateral relations, foremost being encouraging Iranian religious tourism to Jordan.
A source at the Jordanian royal palace said that King Abdullah will meet with the Iranian President Muhammad Khatami and the higher Iranian leader Ayatullah Ali Khamaeni. The source added that the visit which was decided since a while, and postponed for several times, comes now under difficult conditions in the region with the increasing instability in Iraq following the war launched by the US and toppling of the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, and under conditions in the Palestinian territories and the stumbling in the implementation of the Roadmap to establish peace.
The two leaders are to discuss during the two- day visit means of developing economic relations especially increasing the number of Iranians who visit the Kingdom to visit the holy religious sites. Since several years, Jordan has been trying to boost its religious terrorism in Islamic and Christian sites with the aim to revive tourism which has been damaged during the past years because of instability in the region. However, security obstacles and the difficulty for the Iranians to get entry visas to Jordan prevented that, in addition to accusations addressed by Jordanian officials to Iran since years of supporting radical organizations.
The Jordanian king is accompanied by a large delegation including the prime minister Ali Abul Ragheb and Minister of Foreign Affairs Marwan Muasher as well as an economic delegation. The two countries had welcomed the formation of the Interim Iraqi governing council as a preliminary step to transfer the authority for an elected Iraqi government represented by Iraqis.
