King Fahd calls for fighting extremist thinking
Saudi Arabia, Politics, 9/1/2003
Saudi Arabia's King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz has called on men of religion to "fight extremist thinking which had deceived certain Saudi youths and prompted them to join terrorist cells aimed at damaging the kingdom and Islam."
In a speech he delivered before an Islamic conference quoted yesterday by the press, the King said "the problem of ignorance which seeped to certain youths of the nation, tempted terrorist networks of using those youths for purposes which only serve the enemy of the nation. Thereby those youths opened the door for others to accuse Islam of violence and terrorism."
The King added that "this regrettable situation requires reevaluation of thinking, and treatment. Dealing with this matter is not difficult. It is a must to correct this abnormal thinking." He indicated that the mission of mosques is to urge peace, security, cooperation, justice and tolerance.
Meantime, the Saudi daily al-Watan said that the security forces found in a farm to the east of Abha city to the west of the kingdom an amount of weapons and ammunition, and arrested a person whose identity was not disclosed, suspected to be linked to the confiscated items.
The paper said that the curator of the farms which is 13 Km from the city of Abha, discovered "a shelter for weapons under rocks and he immediately notified security sides which arrived at the site and took out the hidden weapons and ammunition." Al-Watan said that the security forces chased two persons following the confiscation of weapons and were able to arrest one of them while the other had escaped.
