Libya agrees to compensate victims of German night club
Libya-Germany, Politics, 8/30/2003

Qathafi International Foundation for Charitable Associations which is headed by Seif al-Islam al-Qathafi, son of the Libyan leader, said that it agreed to pay compensations for the victims of the explosion which took place in 1986 in a Berlin Club which was used frequented by American soldiers.

A statement issued by the foundation said it seeks to settle the matter with families of the victims in order to reach a quick and easy solution. It added that this humanitarian initiative is not a recognition nor an acceptance of responsibility for this action.

Families of non- American victims demand 500,000 EURO for each victim. To American soldiers and a Turkish woman were killed and more than other 200 persons were killed in the explosion. This, however, mitigated the US to launch revenge raids against the Libyan cities in which the Libyan leader's daughter was killed by US air bombing of Libya.

A German court in Berlin accused in 2001 the Libyan intelligence of being behind the attack which took place after the US downed two Libyan boats in the Gulf of Sert.

Earlier the German Der Spiegel magazine said that Libya had notified the German government several months ago its readiness to provide compensations for the non- American victims of the explosion.

On the other hand, Britain agreed to postpone the vote at the UN concerning the lifting of the sanctions imposed on Libya until next week after the latter accepted to claim responsibility for Lockerbie incident and to compensate families of the victims.

The British ambassador in France John Holms said that the postponement aims at availing more time to agree on a new compensation deal with Tripoli for the victims of the explosion which targeted a French passenger plane over Niger in 1989.

Holms explained that London supports the French families which are trying to get three quarters of the compensations. However, there is a limit for the period which Britain will wait until a settlement is reached. Families of the victims of the French plane demand compensations at 120 million dollars.
