Syria-Iraq, Economics, 8/29/2003
Syria and Iraq have agreed to provide the Iraqi Ninawa province with energy, in the first official agreement signed between the two states since the collapse of the Iraqi regime since 4 months.
The Syrian official news agency SANA said that " two cooperation agreements in the area of oil and electricity were signed between the Syrian Arab Republic and representatives for the Iraqi Ninwa governorate at the headquarters of the Syrian Cabinet."
On the Iraqi side, the two agreements were signed by the technical assistant for the governor of Ninwa Muhammad Saleh Arafat and his deputy while the Syrian side was by the director general for the general establishment to electricity production and transfer Ahmad Khaled al-Ali and the director general of the Syrian fuel company Abdullah al-Khattab.
In the field of oil the agreement states that Syria is to provide the Iraqis with oil byproducts in return for supplies of crude Iraqi oil," while the agreement in the field of electricity calls for providing certain Iraqi provinces with electricity due to their drastic needs for the electricity grid under the current conditions.
