Four extremists sentenced to capital punishment

The court of appeal of Casablanca sentenced Tuesday morning four extremists to Capital punishment for active involvement in the terrorist attacks that claimed 45 lives last May 16.

The four persons include three suicide bombers, who survived the attacks, namely Mohamed Omari, Rachid Jalil and Yassine Lahnech. The fourth one is Hassan Taoussi.

Thirty-nine people were given life jail sentences, 15 received up to 30 years of prison.

Meanwhile, 15 defendants were handed down 20 year sentences, 9 to 10 years and two others two 8 years.

Two other defendants were sentenced to 10 months in jail.

The 87 defendants were prosecuted for conspiracy, undermining the interior security of the state, sabotage and murder, premeditated sabotage and complicity in acts of violence that led to permanent disability.

In the same connection, the court of appeal of Rabat handed down Monday sentences ranging between 5 years and life jail sentences against 10 members of "Agadir group" who were accused of belonging to Salafia Jihadia hardline group.

The court of first of instance of Rabat sentenced 15 members of another underground group "Al Hijra Wa Takfir" to 2 to 3 years in prison for "shaking Moslems faith and holding non-authorized meetings."

A Spanish restaurant, the Belgian consulate, a Jewish community center, and a hotel were all targeted in the string of terrorist attacks.
